After being revived in 2003, it appears that the name United States Lines will disappear again,
Being fans of the old S.S. United States, we had frankly not known that there was a cargo/container charter line that had borrowed the name too.Whatever the reason for the merger, we hope veteran shipping guy Ed Aldridge made pile on the sale. After all, there hasn’t been much good news in American shipping.
And while we hate to see something sold out to the French and have yet another great old name disappear, we know the United States Lines name will be back one of these days. Because if CMA CGM doesn’t use it, someone else will pick up on that goodwill.
Plus, CGM, or Compagnie Générale Maritime, is TRULY one of the great shipping brands, so if it had to go to someone, that would be a better one than the others.
