In the 1960s and 70s, television provided hours of entertaining but educational fare for kids. Things like ABC’s Schoolhouse Rock.
The best of the best was In the News, a CBS Saturday morning news segment for kids. It was only one news segment, but it was slickly produced and told a great story. None of these didactic sort of lectures that networks give kids. Instead, the news departments would tell an ACTUAL story that was informative or entertaining. The lesson was buried.
The late CBS News correspondent Christopher Glenn, who died in 2006, was the host of the segments. The tone of the segments were set by the introduction, which was designed by CBS’ award winning design department during the Lou Dorfsman era.
