Those of an age to remember Jack Tramiel and his Commodore PET, VIC-20 and Commodore 64 will be heartened to read that there will be a new Commodore computer. This Commodore will be a so-called “netbook” for light use, reports CNET Crave. The Commodore UMMD 8010/F will have a 1.6GHz Via C7-M processor. And unlike the Chicklet-keyed Commodore PET, it won’t have a cassette tape as a hard drive!
Commodore, founded by Tramiel in 1977, grew out of a typewriter repair shop. The 64 sold 17 million units; in 1994 the company went bankrupt, but the name returned to the market in 2005. The company has enormous brand equity, not only its computers, but in the games that were played by two generations of kids, games like Star Ranger, Star Post, Jupiter Lander and Arctic Shipwreck. Thus, the current Commodore brand is more about gaming, with a Gravel line of peripherals.
