Eight O’Clock Coffee Grinds Up Starbucks

Eight O’Clock beats Starbucks?

A recent study from Consumer Reports, published on Yahoo, looked at coffee from blind taste tests, including all brands.Their verdict? Says Consumer Reports:

  • Chock full o’Nuts and Maxwell House have pushed coffee that’s “heavenly” and “good to the last drop” since 1932 and 1907, respectively. But off-notes, little complexity, and, for Chock full o’ Nuts, variable quality put both behind Eight O’Clock.
  • Midwest-based Caribou and Kickapoo beat an array of larger players among regular coffees. But Bucks County Coffee, from Langhorne, Penn., tasted only OK, and Peet’s, from Berkeley, Calif., was burnt and bitter, despite costing $14 per pound. Peet’s, Archer Farms, and Kickapoo also varied from batch to batch.

  1. Eight O’Clock beans! We use the Black and Decker coffee maker that grinds the beans first and then makes your pot of coffee. Nothing else compares. Starbucks? Gack who wants over roasted bitter coffee? We buy the 32 oz bag from Wally World, great deal, great price.

  2. The only cup of coffee I’ve had that beats A&P’s Eight O’Clock in the red bag was not Starbucks, but a cup of some delicious local Kona I had in Hawaii. Of course with airfare, that cup cost me around $1002!

Glad to have fresh ground EO’C back in Florida now.

  3. Yeahhhhh, I remember that grinder! A & P at 170th Street & Jerome.,My mom & Dad loved 8 O’Clock, it came in a red bag! When the bag was empty our cat would stick her head & body deep in the bag as she could, practically wearing it, she’d squirm on the foor, she loved the smell of 8 O’Clock! Thank you for the Memory!
Miss you Mom, Dad, & Mitzy!

  4. Nonna Lucia alaways bought A&P 8 O’Clock Coffee at our local A&P under the Pelham Parkway El. The grinder was a huge machine at the end of the checkout register, and she’d dump in the bag, stick the now-empty bag under the spout, turn on the switch and grrrrrrrrrrrrrprrrrrblaaat!! the coffe, now ground, floated in aromatic majesty into the bag, and thenceward into our humble Bronx abode, to make Nonna’s mornings more enjoyable, and filling our home with the robust aroma of wake-up coffee every day.

A&P had other types of coffees too– in different colored bags.
