Classic Brands: Jack Tar Marine Paint

Jack Tar Marine Finishes marine paint is an enduring enamel alkyd paint for marine, metal and pipes. It’s made by BLP Mobile Paints of Mobile, Alabama. Their main product is Jack Tar Yacht Deck Enamel. They also have an “olive drab” paint for skiffs.

Their product sheets say that the paint is:

For industrial and marine use including machinery, piping, floors, decks, structural steel, marine vessels, storage tank exteriors and power plant equipment. For coating properly prepared steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, masonry and wood surfaces. Jack Tar Yacht Deck Enamel provides protection against weather and abrasion in industrial and marine environments. Good color and gloss retention on exterior exposure. Excellent abrasion resistance to withstand repeated traffic. Heat resistant up to 250°F.

The Mobile Paint Company made “Southernized” coatings in Mobile, Alabama’s waterfront district. They developed special formulas for the “subtropical” region and still have a “Caribbean Division.”

Mobile Paint Company eventually bought Mobile Varnish Works plant and consolidated there in 1934.
