WASHINGTON, D.C.National Geographic continues to go beyond its legacy mandate of encouraging travel, geography education and an interest in the living patterns and live systems of the world. Susan Goldberg, Editor-in-Chief of National Geographic, will moderate a forum on COVID-19 this Thursday, July 22, 2021. Co-hosted by the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health, the forum will convene scientists, researchers and policy makers to share, according to a news release, “highlights of their work and personal journeys during COVID-19″ and their thoughts on the “new roadmap we all must follow” in order to create a safer world.

Italics are our own emphasis, as one might have naively thought the venerable National Geographic brand was about actual journeys, to places, and actual roadmaps to real locations, destinations that were are are often highly unsafe, places that we sometimes should not go.

These sorts of everyday beltway events pass by unremarked, and sometimes illustrate sea changes about the changed priority of an organization. Indeed sea changes are perhaps a main interest of the society in these days.

In spite of the oddness of the participation of NGS, it could be a useful panel. Participants can ask questions of the panelists, who include: Dr. Helene Gayle, President and Chief Executive Officer, Chicago Community Trust; Dr. Kathrin Jansen, Senior Vice President and Head of Vaccine Research and Development, Pfizer Inc.; Dr. Cliff Lane, Deputy Director for Clinical Research and Special Projects, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at NIH; Dr. Peter Marks, Director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, FDA Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist, World Health Organization. You can register HERE where there are bios of each of the participants.
