More than Bundt: All American Nordic Ware

Bundt Label from Nordic WareMore than Bundt

MINNEAPOLIS – One of the great Made in USA companies is Nordic Ware, inventors of the Bundt pan.

Nordic Ware was founded in 1946 by H. David and Dorothy Dalquist. Their first products were kitchenware for the ethnic market, including the Rosette Iron, Ebleskiver Pan and Krumkake Iron. But their product innovation continued in the 1960s, with the Bundt and the first use of Teflon in cookware. They are not restricted to food uses; their technology and expertise in coatings in their Nordic Ware Industrial Coatings Division is even useful for medical tools.

They do a number of things correctly, including understanding that leadership in technology means that they need to keep certain manufacturing in the United States. While there is wonderful psychological element of knowing that your all-American food has been cooked in American-made factories, the benefit for Nordic is different. Things like cake pans are low margin; but their manufacturing expertise in this area gives them an ability to move into the medical field.

The company has a factory store that is actually where the plant is located. They give cooking classes at their factory store. Great idea, rather like Indiana’s Clabber Girl.
