One of the great forgotten American brands is Coca-Cola’s Tab. While it is still sold, and has a sort of cult following, products like Tab are always at risk of being shut down. After all, who would have thought that there would be no more Polaroid film after this year? But just last week, the company announced it would stop making Polaroid film. The hoarding has come.
Thankfully for Tab lovers, there is the website I Love Tab, or www.ilovetab.com. The site has a petition to help save Tab. It also has a history of Tab and some old advertising. Tab. What a beautiful drink.
The site’s slogan is a quotation taken from Andy Warhol, published in Andy Warhol’s America. It makes a good case for the classic soft drinks brand.
“You can see a billboard for TaB and think: Nancy Reagan drinks TaB , Gloria Vanderbilt drinks TaB. Jackie Onassis drinks TaB , and just think, you can drink TaB too. TaB is TaB and no matter how rich you are, you can’t get a better one than the one the homeless woman on the corner is drinking. All the TaBs are the same. And all the TaBs are good.”
I remember my grandmother used to drink this stuff.
Tab is my personal favorite and someone invariably asks me, “Do they still sell TAB?”
No, I’ve drinking TAB hoarded from the 70’s…
It is featured in a great little song here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4Wy7gRGgeA&feature=related
