Briefly: Planters Continues to Expand Nut Line

AUSTIN, Minn. – The Hormel brand Planters continues to expand its product line into packaged nut snacks, including a line of flavored cashews. The three new flavors are Cinnamon Brown Sugar Cashews, Dill Pickle Cashews and Rosemary and Sea Salt Cashews.

Zeeshan Tarique, the Planters senior brand manager, said that the brand would begin heavily marketing these in July.

Planters is owned by Hormel Foods Corporation, based in Austin, Minn., a $12 billion revenue grocery products firm that sells in 80 countries. Brands include Skippy, Spam, Hormel Natural Choice, Applegate, Justin’s, Wholly, Hormel Black Label, Columbus, Jennie-O and more than 30 others.

The Planters brand dates from 1906, when Amedeo Obici and Mario Peruzzi formed the Planters Nut and Chocolate Company. Mr. Peanut, who appears on the packages, dates from 1913, and Suffolk schoolchild Antonio Gentile, who won $5 in a contest for the idea. Commercial artists later updated the image.
