The venerable prep brand Duck Head is for sale.
Duck Head became a private label brand sold at Tennessee-based Goody’s Family Clothing. The bankruptcy of the company has put the brand up for sale, according to Gabe Fried, principal of Needham Heights, Mass-based Streambank LLC. Wrote Fried on Linked in:
“This brand was especially strong in men’s bottoms (khakis) prior to Goody’s ownership and has branched out to include the Duck Head Jeans Co. and has an ongoing footwear license with Old Dominion Footwear.”
According to their Wikipedia entry, they were founded in 1865 in Nashville by brothers George and Joe O’Bryan. The brothers began making pants out of “duck” cloth tent material, and the name stuck. In the 1980s, they were among the top brands of khakis in private schools.
It’s a great brand, with tons of equity.
The company was known as O’Bryan Brothers Manufacturing Company. In 1989, Delta Woodside Industries purchased the company in 1989 in an attempt to create a national brand. It was then owned by Tropical Sportswear International, which bought the company in 200 but it went bankrupt in 2005.
